Preparing for your family photo session with Vala Vincent, a Denver and Golden family photographer. It is an honor to be able to create beautiful photos for your family. It is my hope that together we craft not only awesome memories, but gorgeous, timeless images as well.
I offer a candid photojournalist style. I love capturing families playing, snuggling, telling jokes and love one another. I will use directed play to capture the beauty of your family.
I offer an in home consult before our Denver family photo session. This is where I get to know you and your family. We will have a relaxed chat about what is to come and the best way for you to prepare. Each family is different and requires different advice on how to prepare. This is also where we discuss your plan for the photos.
Your clothing options can make or break the beauty of your session. I want you to feel and look the best. Each season asks for different colors and patterns. There are different pattern and color options for spring than for fall. During our pre-consult I will go over wardrobe options with you. Since I will be already in your home chatting, I will look over your clothing options. If you already know you need to shop for the session, we can switch the in-home session to a shopping session. I am here to help!
The night before your family photography session is not the time to stay up late. This advice isn’t just to avoid baggy eyes. When we are tired, we aren’t as patient, cheerful and happy. I want you to come to the session excited. Not grouchy and wanting it to be over before it even starts. The session will be filled with play and fun. I want you to enjoy it!
This is an aspect that most people don’t take in account. Your diet will show on your skin. Sugar is the biggest culprit. If you can stay away from sugar for at least a week before the session, your skin will look much better. There is less chance of outbreak. The redness will reduce and your skin will get a beautiful glow. Sugar is very addictive, this is why I ask for a whole week without sugar. At that point you have gotten over the irritation and majority of the cravings. Keep in mind, you can still have chocolate! Just keep it 70% or darker!
No matter what age your child is, talk to them about the session. Tell them what is about to happen. Make sure they know this will be FUN. Please stay away from threats and bribes. They aren’t going to be necessary. My goal isn’t to capture your child being at it’s best behavior. Let’s face it, that makes up for about 1% of our child’s life. I want to capture them laughing, playing, interacting with YOU. And let them get dirty. There is not a child in this world that manages to stay clean for more than 5 minutes. Let’s celebrate it!
Baby’s and children are grouchy when they are tired, cold/hot and hungry. It is essential that you dress them according to weather. If it is cold, layer up. If it is hot, don’t. Give them snacks before the session and keep healthy snacks available during the session. If the session time goes into bedtime, help them through it with an extra nap during the day. I only do outdoor sessions at a certain time of the day. This is to capture the best light that Colorado has to offer. It is worth that extra nap! And please, I cannot stress this enough; do NOT tell your child to smile and pose a certain way. This is always unnatural and will rarely give me a beautiful real smile! Leave that up to me.
98% of the times I am hired by the mother. I have been hired by dads in a few rare cases. During our pre-consult I hope that both parents can be there. I also understand that isn’t always an option. Please tell your husbands that the session will be painless and fun. Tell them to look at the session as a family day. You get to relax and play with your children. There might be an odd person following you around and get uncomfortably close to you while enjoying your child’s snuggle. Ignore me, and focus on your children!
This is extremely difficult for us parents. If you are not in the picture, let me interact with your children, unless I ask for help. This is a time for you to take a break and enjoy watching me trying to tame your wild offspring. If your child is getting constant directions from you, it will serve as a distraction. Remember, I use directed play to achieve the candid photojournalist style. Give your little one a chance to play, if they aren’t giving up those big smiles right off the bat, it’s okay. It’s a process, the smile will come!
During our pre-consult make sure to let me know what matters to you. This can be anything. I for example am almost always absent in our children photos. Seeing how I’m the one taking them, duh! It is very important to me that I get a photo of me and my girls, and me with each girl. I also want a photo of just me and my husband. There is a distant memory of us being a couple, not just parents. Tell me what you want, your interests and hobbies. What activities do your children like. Do they have a lovie or a blankie they can’t live without. Bring it with you!
I love it when you bring the whole family with you, including the furry ones. If you do, make sure to walk your dog before you bring them. Arrive early and let them explore a bit before. It is easier for me to grab a dogs attention if he has already smelled that pesky squirrel scent on the ground. This is a complete judgement call. If it causes you extra stress, it might not be the right year to bring your puppy. If it is, know that I not only welcome your pets, I embrace them!Preparing for your family photo session doesn’t have to be difficult. It all comes down to making time for the pre-consult. I will do most of the work and guide you every step of the way.
